The pen of one million milk cartons
How much milk can a cow produce? That depends on her longevity and production performance. But to give visitors to the Grasdag 2023 an idea, K.I. Samen presented a group of cows in one pen who together had produced one million 1-litre cartons of milk. The Grasdag 2023 was hosted this year by the K.I. Samen breeding station and dairy farm.
Star cow
Grashoek Tonnie 72 (s. LadyLover) has been awarded ‘Star Cow 1’ status, while her dam Grashoek Tonnie 66 (s. Kian) is a ‘Star Cow 2’. Both are still herd members at the K.I. Samen breeding station and dairy farm and were joined by a small number of other cows in the pen of one million milk cartons. Grashoek Tonnie 72 is the 49th cow at the K.I. Samen breeding station and dairy farm to produce 100 tons of milk.
Longevity and high lifetime production
K.I. Samen’s vision of breeding is to create a long-lasting and highly productive herd. Both ladies are the picture of balanced cows in perfect health, which has enabled them to reach these milestones.
Pen of one million
Especially for the Grasdag, K.I. Samen created the ‘Pen of one million’ by presenting a group of cows who together had produced one million litres of milk. So how many cows does it take to produce one million litres of milk? The pen during the Grasdag 2023 housed ten cows! Grashoek Tonnie 72 and Grashoek Tonnie 66 were also in the pen.
